I am always impressed by the resiliency and creativity of young people with ADHD. In order to achieve similar degrees of success as neurotypical individuals, they have to push themselves harder and find atypical strategies for dealing with life’s challenges. Inspired by the incredible advances and accomplishments of the ADHD College Success program, I jumped at the chance to contribute to an important and commendable calling.
My path to ADHD College Success was far from straight forward. After obtaining my BA in Fine Arts from Pepperdine University, I enjoyed the creativity and fast-paced environment as a visual merchandising manager for top retail stores for over 16 years, overseeing and training many staff members along the way. In my management roles for Fortune 500 companies, I closely supervised young adults, many with ADHD. Wanting to continue working with this demographic, I joined the ADHD College Success Program Team in early 2012 as a workshop co-facilitator and academic coach.
In addition to my coaching and co-facilitating roles, I coordinate and lead all the art-related workshop activities. My creative background allows me to devise innovative, personalized solutions for my clients’ unique problems while also understanding and helping them to improve upon their own solutions. Understanding the nuanced needs of young people with ADHD enables me to bring a broad range of organizational skills to the table.
I recall the feeling of not knowing what to do next with my art degree after I graduated from college. In retrospect, I would have greatly benefited from having someone guide me in the next stage of career development. As an academic/life coach, I seek to provide that missing support and guide young people through many of the confusing choices they will have to make as students or as they transition to career and life.
