The centerpiece of the ADHD College Success Guidance Program is an intensive 4-day residential workshop in which participants tackle the obstacles of ADHD, learn skills to overcome them, and craft strategies to apply these skills within the college environment and beyond.

Before the Workshop

Each participant undergoes an initial assessment to identify their specific challenges and focus on the experiences that have shaped their academic life to date.

The Workshop

Once in the retreat environment, the participants engage in both a communal and individual process of intense work.

Communally, they share their experiences with one another and establish a common ground and language to explore the difficulties they’ve all faced. During the course of the work, they help and impel one another forward, creating lasting bonds that they carry with them away from the workshop.

Individually, participants are first encouraged to identify academic, career and life goals. These goals are then tried on in a safe setting through a number of exercises, all the while assuring they are reachable outside of the workshop.

As the work intensifies through the weekend, Workshop Facilitators help participants continually recreate and update their objectives. This on-going process enables the individuals to dig deeper to reach for goals they never thought imaginable, while at the same time integrating a belief structure that recognizes and insures that they are obtainable.

Next, the participants begin a series of exercises and trainings to develop strategic methods that they can incorporate into their everyday life to achieve those goals while monitoring progress and regression. They learn a series of principles and a skill set specifically geared to addressing the distractions and difficulties faced by students with ADHD. For a more in-depth look, please see our training agenda.

Participants leave the workshops with a completed workbook in which they’ve journaled their progress through the program. This document holds:

  • their unique individualized goals,
  • a roadmap that they developed to meet them (their “plan of action”)
  • strategies and tactics for handling their own challenges,
  • a means to navigate through the distractions that may derail their progress, and
  • methods for monitoring success.

3 After the Workshop:

We believe that the work – assessment of strengths and weakness, learning and applying our methods, and integrating them into successful actions – takes on even greater importance when the participant begins course work and the distractions return. After the workshop, Our Academic Coaches schedule a session to follow-up on how participants are embracing their new-found skills, and how they will move forward with them in college and career.

Although many students find that the workshop and follow-up academic coaching prepares them for college success, others have found that some continued weekly or other regular follow up with a coach helps them to maintain progress with their Plan of Action for Success, integrate the guiding principles into their college work, and develop the habit of keeping in their success zone. For these students, we have a program staffed with coaches that is tailored to provide this follow up.

The Academic Coaching sessions are three 45-minute sessions. The student and Academic Coach decide what method they will meet:  in-person or virtually.  If at the end of the 3 sessions the student decides to continue with academic coaching, then the student, parent, and coach will meet to discuss next steps.

 The “WOW” (Women’s-Only-Weekend)

Stay tuned for the Summer 2024 Workshop Schedule!

Why a “Women’s Only” Weekend?

Because, starting at a young age, girls have a different experience with ADHD than boys….

Research has shown that boys with ADHD usually show externalized symptoms, such as running and impulsivity. Girls with ADHD, on the other hand, typically show internalized symptoms. These symptoms include inattentiveness and low self-esteem.

Boys also tend to be more physically aggressive, while girls tend to be more verbally aggressive.

Since girls with ADHD often display fewer behavioral problems and less noticeable symptoms, their difficulties are often overlooked.

As a result, they aren’t referred for evaluation or treatment. This can lead to additional problems in the future.

Girls with ADHD usually turn their pain and anger inward. This puts girls at an increased risk for depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Girls with undiagnosed ADHD are also more likely to have problems in school, social settings, and personal relationships than other girls.

Our workshop is centered around the unique challenges that young women face with ADHD. We want to celebrate the unique strengths and struggles of our participants, while sharing useful tools for success in monitoring and managing ADHD and co-occurring conditions. We want every participant to walk away being the best they can be!
